The principal aims of WCCSJ are:
- to enhance the quality, scale and reputation of Welsh research in crime and social justice by fostering regular collaboration between academics in different institutions;
- to add value to policy-making and practice in Wales through the provision of relevant research and evidence;
- to enhance communication and debate between Welsh academics, policy-makers and practitioners by offering a single point of contact for all those working in these fields.
Although WAG is not directly responsible for policing, courts or prisons, it can be argued that effective crime reduction depends as much on inclusionary policies in fields such as housing, education and health as on criminal justice activities. There is also a strong possibility, in the short to medium term, of new devolution of powers and responsibilities in specific areas of criminal justice. This fast moving and increasingly influential Welsh political agenda requires specific knowledge about Welsh criminal and social justice and community safety needs which the WCCSJ is well placed to provide.
