Thematic Networks

The Centre has set up five thematic networks, each led by two or more experts from different universities in Wales.  Members can join one or more of these.  The networks will run seminars and other events, as well as fostering collaborative research, around their central theme.  They will open up new possibilities for pan-Wales analysis of criminal and social justice initiatives.

The five networks are:

  • Young People, Justice and Community Safety
Here we focus on the complex interrelationships between experiences of both well-being and safety and threats to quality of life associated with crime, disorder and experiences of insecurity, of particular interest is the situation of young people.
  • Criminal Justice and Penal Practice
The network will address theoretical, policy and empirical issues relating to systems of criminal justice, punishment and rehabilitation, taking into account their broader connections to communities and non-criminal justice organizations.
  • Substance Misuse
This will promote rigorous research and assist good, evidence based practice in the area of substance misuse in Wales and further afield.
  • Crime and Public Space
This considers the special distribution of crime and the control of public spaces, it will also embrace explanations of offending behaviour and victimisation and how they impact on individuals and communities.
  • Violence Research
The Violence Research Network is coordinated by Dr Fiona Brookman and Professor Paul Rogers from Glamorgan University and Dr Kirsty Hudson from Cardiff University. It will consder all aspects of violence.
