This group is concerned with the social, individual and community effects of substance use in Wales, as well as further afield. Several members of the group have researched and published widely on these themes. Further work is planned on the nature and context of substance misuse (including legal substances such as alcohol and tobacco); the links between substance use and risk behaviours such as violence, crime and involvement in drug markets; the management of health issues generated by substance use; and the development of appropriate and effective responses. Such research can support the national research and evaluation programme in Wales outlined in the three year implementation plan.
